The African Action Congress (AAC) has announced the resignation of human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as the party’s National Chairman.
The announcement came on Tuesday, shortly after Sowore emerged as the AAC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections during the party’s primaries held in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the party, Samuel Ajeigbe was named as the new National Chairman, marking a significant leadership transition within the opposition party as it prepares for the next election cycle.
“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress,” the statement read. “The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party.”
Sowore’s resignation followed his unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders at the primaries held in the Federal Capital Territory, where he was also confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate.
The activist received the party’s flag amid cheers from supporters across several states, signaling strong internal backing ahead of the 2027 elections.
In his acceptance speech, Sowore said the AAC was founded to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance. He also praised party members for their resilience amid political and economic challenges.
Sowore used the platform to criticise the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of poor governance and manipulating public perception ahead of the elections.
He further dismissed claims that the APC had millions of members, saying, “There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members. I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members.”
The leadership change is expected to shape the AAC’s strategy as it positions itself for a more prominent role in Nigeria’s 2027 political landscape.
