ASKY Connects Kano and Niamey

Pan-African airline ASKY has launched a new air service linking Kano, Nigeria, and Niamey, Niger, in a move expected to strengthen trade, tourism and cultural ties between the two countries.

The service became effective on September 2, 2026.

The new route adds Kano to ASKY’s growing network, making the Nigerian city the 31st destination served by the airline.

ASKY’s network now spans more than 30 cities across 28 countries.

Kano Joins ASKY’s Expanding Network

The new service will operate through ASKY’s hub in Lomé, Togo.

As a result, passengers travelling from Kano will have access to onward connections to several business and leisure destinations across West and Central Africa.

The route is expected to improve Kano’s links with other African cities.

It will also give travellers more options for regional business, tourism, family visits and commercial activities.

According to the airline, the connection will extend Kano’s reach beyond northern Nigeria and the immediate West African region.

New Route Revives Historic Trade Corridor

The Kano–Niamey connection also carries historical significance.

For more than a thousand years, the two cities have been linked through trade and movement across the region.

The corridor was once travelled by foot and camel caravan.

Later, road transport became an important means of connecting the two commercial centres.

Kano has long served as a major commercial hub in pre-colonial trans-Saharan trade.

The city was connected to North African markets, including Morocco and Egypt, through extensive trade routes.

These routes supported the movement of goods, people, ideas and cultural practices across the Sahara.

The new air service provides a modern transport link along part of that historic commercial network.

Air Connectivity to Support Trade and Tourism

The launch is expected to support the continued growth of trade between Nigeria and Niger.

Improved air connectivity can make it easier for businesses to attend meetings, explore new markets and develop commercial partnerships.

It can also support the movement of tourists and visitors who may previously have faced longer or more complicated journeys.

For Kano, the service could improve access to regional markets and strengthen the city’s role as a commercial centre.

For Niamey, the connection offers another link to Nigeria’s northern business community.

Reduced Travel Time for Passengers

The airline said the new service would significantly reduce travel time for passengers travelling between the two cities.

The route is also expected to make regional mobility more convenient.

Through its Lomé hub, ASKY will connect passengers from Kano and Niamey to destinations across West and Central Africa.

This could benefit business travellers, tourists, students, families and other passengers moving between the regions.

Strengthening Nigeria–Niger Relations

The new service is expected to reinforce the longstanding fraternal ties between Nigeria and Niger.

Both countries share historical, cultural and commercial connections.

Kano and Niamey have also played important roles in regional trade and cross-border movement.

By improving direct air access between the two cities, ASKY is supporting a modern form of regional integration.

The route could also encourage greater cultural exchange and closer people-to-people relationships.

ASKY’s Regional Integration Mission

ASKY said the new service reflects its mission to connect African cities and promote regional integration.

The airline also aims to facilitate economic and cultural exchange across the continent.

Its growing network provides passengers with access to several African destinations through its Lomé hub.

The Kano–Niamey route is therefore part of a wider effort to improve connectivity within Africa.

Outlook for Kano and Niamey

The launch of the new air service creates an additional link between two cities with deep historical and commercial connections.

It is expected to improve travel options while supporting business, tourism and cultural exchange.

The route also demonstrates the importance of air connectivity in strengthening regional economic relationships.

For Kano and Niamey, the service offers an opportunity to build on their shared history and develop stronger links in the modern African economy.
