South – West Scrabble Open: Umujose Climb Highest On Day 1 in Akure

Emmanuel Umujose Takes Command at 2024 South-West Scrabble Open in Akure

In an exciting start to the 2024 South-West Scrabble Open Tournament in Akure, Ondo State, Emmanuel Umujose showcased his skills by securing 9 wins and a remarkable +575 cumulative points after the first 11 rounds. This strong performance has placed him at the top of the leaderboard in the prestigious event.

Umujose initially claimed the top spot after round 6, but he faced stiff competition as Abdulmumin Jimoh and defending champion Cyril Umebiye surged ahead in round 7 with their victories. However, the Delta State board strategist quickly regained his footing in round 8, defeating Emmanuel Enyi with a score of 513-407, while Jimoh and Umebiye suffered losses to Enoch Nwali and Ibukun Faloye.

Consolidating his position, Umujose achieved back-to-back wins against Faloye and Khaleel Adedeji in rounds 10 and 11, reaffirming his dominance in the tournament. Currently, Enoch Nwali, John Aiyedun, Jimoh, and Umebiye are all tied with 8 wins and 3 losses but are separated by cumulative points of 980, 915, 621, and 572, respectively.

A thrilling atmosphere filled the Imperial Boni Hotel and Resorts Ijapo as top players competed fiercely. Notable competitors, including current African champion Timilehin Doko, also showcased their talents, each recording 7 wins but with varying cumulative points.

As the tournament heads into its final day, four more rounds of games are scheduled, utilizing the King Of The Hill (KOTH) format. South-West coordinator for the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Emmanuel Egbele, commended the players for their dedication and commitment to honing their skills against a backdrop of competitive excellence.
