Nigerian Fans Want Finidi George Out as Coach After Disappointing Loss to Mali

Following a disappointing performance by the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, in their recent friendly match against Mali, Nigerian fans have made a U-turn, urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to seek out a new head coach for the team.

Despite securing a 2-1 victory over Ghana just four days prior, the Super Eagles under the leadership of interim coach Finidi George faced a stark contrast in their match against the Eagles of Mali. The team struggled to maintain their form and cohesion, ultimately succumbing to a 1-0 defeat inside the Stade de Marrakech.

The lone goal of the match came early in the 18th minute when El Bilal Toure capitalized on an opportunity to put Mali ahead. Despite several chances, including a missed one-on-one opportunity for Cyriel Dessers, Nigeria failed to find the back of the net.

In the aftermath of the disappointing result, Nigerian fans expressed their discontent with Finidi George’s leadership. While George was initially appointed as the team’s interim coach following the departure of Jose Peseiro, many supporters are now advocating for the NFF to seek a new foreign coach for the Super Eagles.

Despite George’s candidacy for the permanent coaching role and his notable history as a former Super Eagles star, fans are calling for a change in leadership in hopes of revitalizing the team’s performance.

The interim coach, who played alongside the late Super Eagles legend, has faced criticism for the team’s lackluster performance against Mali. As preparations for the forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resume in June, the NFF faces mounting pressure to address concerns surrounding the coaching staff and ensure the team’s readiness for future competitions.
