Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has come under intense scrutiny from sections of the club’s fanbase after taking a holiday in Sardinia while sidelined with a hamstring injury, triggering controversy ahead of Sunday’s Clasico against FC Barcelona.
The France captain was among several injured players, including Thibaut Courtois and Arda Güler, granted rest days by Real Madrid. However, images circulating on social media showing Mbappé during his trip have angered supporters, with some calling for his departure from the club.
A viral post featuring a “Fuera (out)” stamp over Mbappé’s image has been widely shared by fans, while an online petition urging supporters to “make their voices heard” has also gained traction across social platforms.
Further controversy emerged after photos of Mbappé alongside actress Ester Expósito circulated online during a critical phase of Real Madrid’s La Liga campaign, intensifying scrutiny of the striker’s off-field activities.
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa defended players’ personal time, saying individuals are free to use their rest periods as they see fit, though his remarks were interpreted by some as indirect criticism of senior squad members.
“We didn’t build Real Madrid with players who play in tuxedos, but with players who finish matches with shirts full of sweat and mud,” Arbeloa said, adding that no player is bigger than the club.
Despite the backlash, Mbappé’s camp insists the criticism is exaggerated and misrepresents his recovery process, which they say is being closely monitored by the club’s medical staff.
The 25-year-old, who has scored 41 goals in 41 appearances this season, remains Real Madrid’s top scorer but has faced growing criticism in recent weeks over perceived inconsistency and individual play.
According to Spanish media reports, tensions may also be developing within the dressing room, with teammates Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham emphasising unity following recent matches.
“We fought and we played together,” Vinícius said after a recent win, while Bellingham urged the squad to stay “together until the very last whistle.”
Despite speculation, Mbappé has previously acknowledged the inevitability of criticism at a club of Real Madrid’s stature, stating that players must remain true to themselves under pressure.
As the Clasico approaches, attention now shifts to whether the controversy will affect squad morale in one of the season’s most decisive fixtures.
