Former Zambian First Lady and Daughter Arrested Over Suspected Proceeds of Crime

Former First Lady Esther Lungu and her daughter, Chiyeso Katete, were arrested on Thursday by Zambian authorities for allegedly owning properties worth over $2 million suspected to be proceeds of crime. Charles Phiri, a relative, was also detained in connection with the case.

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) revealed that Ms. Lungu failed to account for the acquisition of 15 double-story flats in Lusaka valued at $1.5 million. Her daughter faces additional charges related to the acquisition of another estate and other high-value properties. Despite the serious allegations, they have been released on bond.

Former President Edgar Lungu, the family patriarch, has announced that they will contest the charges in court. This recent development is not the first legal challenge for Ms. Lungu, who faced corruption charges last year involving motor vehicle theft and title deeds.

Observer say the arrests highlight ongoing efforts by Zambian authorities to address corruption and financial misconduct within the country.
