The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, April 3, 2026, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as public holidays in observance of this year’s Easter celebration.
The announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who congratulated Christians in Nigeria and the diaspora on the festive occasion, describing Easter as a season of reflection and renewal.
The minister encouraged citizens to embrace the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance, and love, drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
“Easter is a period that reminds us of the values of tolerance and community that keep us together as a nation. Nigerians should remain committed to these ideals for the progress of our country,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He further emphasised the government’s commitment to fostering national development, economic growth, and shared prosperity, urging citizens to celebrate responsibly while promoting unity and goodwill.
The Easter holidays follow closely after the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, which was observed between March 19 and 20, 2026. This highlights Nigeria’s recognition of major religious celebrations from both faiths, reflecting the country’s multi-religious composition and efforts to strengthen tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
The minister wished all Christians a joyful and peaceful Easter, urging Nigerians to carry the values of love, unity, and community beyond the holiday period.
