The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) defeated Zimbabwe 2-1 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Harare on Monday, September 28, 2026.
Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa opened the scoring for DR Congo in the 30th minute. He reacted quickly after Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze failed to hold a cross, poking the loose ball into the net.
Wissa then played a key role in DR Congo’s second goal. In first-half stoppage time, he sent a pass through to Samuel Moutoussamy, who finished from inside the box to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Zimbabwe improved after the break and continued to push for a comeback. Their efforts eventually produced a goal in the third minute of added time when Marshall Munetsi reduced the deficit to 2-1. However, DR Congo held on to secure all three points.
The victory gives DR Congo six points from two matches in Group E. They had opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea.
Zimbabwe remain on three points, while Equatorial Guinea also have three points after defeating Sierra Leone 1-0. Sierra Leone have yet to record a point after their opening two matches.
The result was also significant for Zimbabwe because the match marked their return to playing an international fixture at home in Harare after a lengthy absence caused by stadium renovations.
DR Congo will now look to maintain their strong start as the battle for qualification from Group E continues.
