Cassava, Vodafone, Elsewedy Back $1bn Egypt Data Centre and Sovereign AI Push

Africa Data Centres Egypt will begin with 20MW capacity and scale towards 200MW, while a parallel sovereign AI facility brings Nvidia-powered computing infrastructure onto Egyptian soil.

Cassava Technologies has joined Vodafone Business and Elsewedy Electric in an ambitious data-centre development in Egypt that could attract as much as $1 billion in investment, strengthening the North African country’s bid to become a regional hub for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and data infrastructure.

The companies have agreed to establish Africa Data Centres Egypt, a large-scale facility designed to serve Egyptian businesses as well as international technology companies, cloud providers and other organisations requiring substantial computing capacity.

The project will start with an initial operational capacity of 20 megawatts within its first three years, before expanding towards a targeted 200MW. Egypt expects the first phase to attract approximately $200 million in foreign direct investment, with total investment potentially reaching $1 billion once the planned capacity is completed.

The development is expected to create up to 200 direct jobs and approximately 2,000 indirect employment opportunities, while using Egyptian talent in the construction, operation and management of the infrastructure.

Egypt Gets Sovereign AI Infrastructure

The project carries additional significance because Vodafone Business and Cassava are also developing what has been described as Egypt’s first sovereign AI data centre.

The facility will bring advanced Nvidia computing technologies into Egypt and make GPU-as-a-Service available locally, allowing companies and government institutions to develop and operate computationally demanding AI applications without necessarily building their own expensive computing infrastructure.

The word “sovereign” is particularly important.

Instead of sensitive information being transferred abroad for processing on overseas computing infrastructure, organisations will be able to run certain workloads within Egypt.

That gives businesses and public institutions greater control over where their information is processed and stored, while helping them meet domestic regulatory and cybersecurity requirements.

Cassava Expands African Infrastructure Footprint

For Cassava Technologies, the agreement extends an African digital-infrastructure strategy already spanning connectivity, cloud computing and data centres.

Cassava brings its data-centre experience to the venture, while Elsewedy contributes expertise in energy, infrastructure and major project delivery. Vodafone Business brings cloud, enterprise and telecommunications capabilities.

That combination matters because modern AI data centres are as much an energy challenge as a computing challenge.

High-performance GPUs consume enormous quantities of electricity and require sophisticated cooling, power-management and backup systems.

The planned expansion from 20MW to 200MW illustrates the scale of the infrastructure Egypt is trying to develop.

AI Race Drives African Data-Centre Investment

The project also reflects a wider transformation taking place across Africa.

AI adoption is increasing demand for computing infrastructure capable of training and running sophisticated models. At the same time, governments and businesses are increasingly concerned about storing sensitive national and corporate data outside their own jurisdictions.

Those trends are creating a new investment opportunity for African data centres.

Egypt has an additional geographical advantage.

Its location between Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe — alongside major international subsea telecommunications routes — gives it the potential to serve customers well beyond its domestic market.

Egypt’s government says it is preparing an integrated national data-centre strategy covering the country’s future storage and computing requirements while developing investment incentives and a regulatory framework intended to attract additional capital.

From Connectivity to Computing Power

Africa’s digital-development debate was once dominated by the need to connect more people to the internet.

Connectivity remains critical, but the next phase increasingly involves where African data is stored and where African AI applications are actually computed.

That makes projects such as Africa Data Centres Egypt strategically important.

If the full $1 billion investment and 200MW capacity are delivered, Egypt will not simply gain another technology facility.

It will strengthen the physical infrastructure needed to host cloud platforms, AI services and data-intensive businesses locally — potentially positioning the country as one of Africa’s most important centres for the next generation of digital infrastructure.
