Basketball: Nigeria’s 3X3 Basketball Team Shines at FIBA Africa Cup

In what can best be described as a historic achievement, Nigeria’s 3X3 Men’s Basketball team has etched its name in glory by securing a momentous silver medal at the Africa Senior Men’s 3X3 Cup championship held in Egypt.

Comprising the formidable quartet of Deola Folarin, Marcel Obinna, Kelvin Okundaye, and Robert Ukawuba, the team’s remarkable success marks Nigeria’s first-ever silver win in the prestigious tournament, a feat celebrated for defying all odds.

Vice-Chairman of the 3X3 Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) committee, Ugo Udezue, credited the team’s triumph to the inspiration and unwavering support from President Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, acknowledging his pivotal role in making the tournament a reality. Udezue expressed gratitude to the Ahmadu Musa Kida Foundation (AMK), a leading force in 3×3 basketball in West Africa, for facilitating the team’s participation.

“We are grateful to the Ahmadu Musa Kida Foundation (AMK), who are the pioneer and proponents of 3×3 basketball in West Africa, for making it possible for the team to participate,” remarked Udezue.

Engr. Musa Kida, President of the NBBF, lauded the team for their outstanding representation on the global stage, commending their dedication and sacrifices. The players, now ranking among the elite 3X3 players worldwide, have brought immense pride to Nigeria.

Senator John Owan Enoh, the Honorable Minister for Sports Development, joined in praising the African stars and the NBBF for their role in elevating the nation’s stature. The minister emphasized the players’ love for representing Nigeria in the green and white, embodying the spirit of national pride.

With this latest achievement, the NBBF has solidified its position as a formidable force in 3×3 basketball on the African continent, emerging as one of the teams to beat.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s success has not only marked a historic moment in the Africa Senior Men’s 3X3 Cup but has also potentially secured a coveted spot in the upcoming 3×3 World Championship scheduled for the coming year.
