Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that he is a descendant of King Kosoko, a historic Lagos monarch known for resisting British colonial forces during the early colonial era in Nigeria.

The singer made the disclosure during an interview on Great Day Houston, which was published on YouTube on Thursday.

Speaking about his royal heritage, Adekunle Gold said King Kosoko fought against British forces when they first arrived in Nigeria through Lagos. According to him, the monarch later went into exile before eventually returning and reclaiming his influence.

“My progenitor used to be king of Lagos. His name is King Kosoko. He fought the British when they first came to Nigeria through Lagos to try to take our things,” the singer said during the interview.

The Yoruba-born artiste, who was also born and raised in Lagos, described his family history as a source of pride and inspiration.

Adekunle Gold also shared the story behind his stage name, revealing that he believes it came through divine inspiration during a church service.

According to him, he had been praying and searching for a suitable stage name when a preacher repeatedly mentioned the phrase “Gold” during a sermon. He said he immediately felt it was a sign from God.

“Something just told me it must have been God. God told me at that point that that’s your name,” he said.

The singer explained that he instantly decided to adopt the name Adekunle Gold because he felt it perfectly reflected his identity and journey.
