At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured on Tuesday evening after gunmen opened fire at an informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Police confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, saying a manhunt has been launched for more than 10 suspects linked to the attack.
The shooting occurred at the Jumpers informal settlement, where the assailants reportedly arrived in a white Toyota Quantum vehicle.
According to police, the suspects entered the settlement through two separate access points before opening fire at multiple locations and fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.
Authorities said the motive for the attack remains unknown as investigations continue.
South Africa continues to grapple with extremely high levels of violent crime. The country records one of the highest murder rates globally, averaging about 60 killings per day.
Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward as efforts intensify to track down those responsible.
The incident has added to growing concerns about safety in informal settlements, which often experience limited policing and high levels of vulnerability to violent crime.
Investigations are ongoing.
