The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line will begin operations at 6:00 a.m. and increase daily train trips from June 15, 2026, in a move aimed at improving commuter convenience and expanding capacity along the Marina–Mile 2 corridor.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) through its Head of Corporate Communications, Kolawole Ojelabi.
According to LAMATA, the adjustment reflects rising passenger demand and the need to enhance service efficiency across the corridor.
Under the revised timetable, weekday and Saturday operations will now begin at 6:00 a.m., compared to the previous 6:30 a.m. start time.
Daily train trips will also increase from 90 to 94, while Sunday services will rise from 22 to 24 trips.
The authority said trains will continue to operate at 30-minute intervals, with closing time remaining 9:30 p.m.
“The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a major enhancement to the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line service, increasing daily train operations from 90 to 94 trips and shifting the start of weekday and Saturday services to 6:00 AM from the previous 6:30 AM,” the statement read.
LAMATA added that the new timetable will take effect from Monday, June 15, 2026.
Since the commencement of operations on September 4, 2023, the Blue Line has transported more than six million passengers, according to the agency.
The Lagos State Government has been progressively shifting its transport strategy toward a multimodal system anchored on rail, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and ferry services.
The policy is aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving connectivity and supporting the mobility needs of Lagos’ rapidly growing population.
As part of this strategy, the government has continued to expand rail infrastructure and improve operational capacity across existing corridors.
In 2025, additional train sets were delivered for the Blue Line to improve frequency and reduce waiting times for passengers.
The Lagos Blue Line Rail is a 27-kilometre electrified metro system under the Lagos Rail Mass Transit programme designed to reduce dependence on road transport and improve urban mobility.
Phase 1 of the project, which runs from Marina to Mile 2, began commercial operations in 2023 as the first operational rail corridor in the state’s broader transport master plan.
Phase 2, which will extend the line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2026, according to the Lagos State Government.
The expansion is expected to further ease traffic congestion and strengthen Lagos’ position as a growing megacity with integrated public transport systems.
