Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has revealed that personal tragedies played a significant role in his struggles during the 2025–26 season, describing the campaign as one of the most challenging periods of his life.

The France international remained a key figure for Liverpool throughout the season, making 51 appearances across all competitions, including 49 starts. However, despite his consistent presence in the team, Konaté admitted he found it difficult to maintain the high standards he had previously set as Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League.

Reflecting on the season in comments reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, the 27-cap France defender spoke candidly about the emotional burden he carried while trying to perform at the highest level.

“There was never a moment when I felt like I was on the mend.

“All of these tragic events happened so quickly and as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened,” Konaté said.

The defender explained that a succession of personal losses left him emotionally exhausted, making it difficult to fully focus on football despite his commitment to both club and country.

Even amid the challenges, Konaté continued to feature regularly for Liverpool and remains part of Didier Deschamps’ France squad as preparations continue for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The centre-back credited the support of Liverpool supporters, his teammates and family for helping him navigate the difficult period. However, he acknowledged that he also had to find inner strength to continue competing and contributing to the team.

“I had the support of all these fans, who are exceptional at Liverpool, my team-mates and especially my family but I also had to learn how to get back on my feet on my own because the team needed me more than ever and I know that my father would have wanted me to get back,” he said.

Konaté’s comments provide a deeper understanding of the challenges athletes often face away from the spotlight. While supporters and observers assess performances on the pitch, the defender’s experience highlights the personal struggles that can affect players behind the scenes.

As he looks ahead to a new season with Liverpool and a potential World Cup campaign with France, Konaté will hope to put a difficult year behind him and return to the commanding form that has made him one of the club’s most important defenders.
