A tragic dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru, Kenya, has killed at least 10 students, according to local media reports on Thursday.
The fire broke out at around 1 a.m. local time while students were asleep inside the dormitory. Emergency rescue teams rushed to the scene and continued searching through the damaged building hours later.
Capital FM reported that firefighters and police officers worked through the night to contain the blaze and evacuate other students from the school compound. The station cited regional police commander Samuel Ndanyi, who confirmed the ongoing rescue operation.
“It is a distressing and saddening situation,” county police official Masoud Mwinyi told worried parents gathered outside the school, according to Citizen Television.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to examine the scene after rescue operations are completed.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety in Kenyan boarding schools. In 2024, another deadly school fire in nearby Nyeri County killed 21 students at a primary boarding school.
Officials have urged calm as families wait for updates on missing students and survivors.
