The Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent reduction in fares on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi.
According to the ministry, the fare reduction is part of efforts to ease transportation costs for Nigerians travelling during the festive period.
“The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, has approved a 50% fare discount on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation as part of measures to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” the statement read.
The discount takes effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and will remain in place until Monday, June 1, 2026.
The ministry said ticket fares across all NRC passenger train services nationwide will be reduced by half within the period.
Passengers who had already purchased tickets before the announcement will also benefit through a rebate arrangement, allowing them to reuse the value for travel within the discount window.
“Passengers who had earlier purchased tickets at the full fare before the announcement will be entitled to a 50% rebate, reusable for train rides on or before Monday, June 1, 2026,” the statement added.
The ministry clarified that train schedules and timetables will remain unchanged during the period.
It also extended Eid greetings to Muslim faithful, wishing Nigerians a peaceful and joyful celebration.
The announcement comes as increased travel activity is recorded across parts of the country ahead of the festive period.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark Eid-ul-Adha.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Islamic celebrations observed worldwide.
To enhance safety during the holiday movement, the Federal Road Safety Corps has deployed 950 personnel across Kwara State, including officers, marshals, special marshals, and first responders.
