President Bola Tinubu has charged Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners to work towards improving the country’s global image, attract foreign investment, and strengthen strategic international partnerships.
Tinubu gave the directive on Monday during the opening of an induction course for the envoys held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. He was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
According to a statement issued by the SGF’s media aide, Yomi Odunuga, the President said the appointments reflect confidence in the diplomats’ ability to advance Nigeria’s interests globally amid shifting geopolitical and economic realities.
Tinubu noted that the international system is undergoing rapid changes driven by economic uncertainty, technological disruption, climate challenges, and emerging security threats, stressing the need for a more dynamic and results-oriented diplomatic approach.
He urged the envoys to combine traditional diplomacy with digital engagement, public communication, and strategic messaging to better project Nigeria’s achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The President also emphasised the importance of telling Nigeria’s story more effectively to reshape global perceptions and attract foreign direct investment, trade opportunities, and technology transfer.
Tinubu highlighted the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora as a key priority and announced a reordering of Nigeria’s foreign policy framework, known as the 4D Doctrine—now rearranged as Demography, Development, Diaspora, and Democracy—to place citizens at the centre of foreign policy outcomes.
He further called for professionalism, integrity, accountability, and measurable performance in diplomatic missions, urging envoys to manage resources prudently and deliver tangible results.
Tinubu commended the National Assembly for the swift confirmation of the nominees and reminded the diplomats that their role is critical to repositioning Nigeria in global affairs, adding: “The world is watching.”
