Benin’s Finance Minister, Romuald Wadagni, has secured a landslide victory in the country’s April 12 presidential election, winning more than 94% of votes according to provisional results released by the electoral commission on Monday.

Sacca Lafia, head of the Benin Independent Electoral Commission, announced on national television that the results were based on over 90% of ballots counted, confirming Wadagni’s decisive lead.

He also reported a voter turnout of 58.78% in the election, noting that the margin was already insurmountable.

Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpe conceded defeat earlier on Monday, effectively confirming Wadagni’s path to the presidency.

The result marks a significant political transition in Benin, where Wadagni’s overwhelming support underscores strong voter backing for the ruling establishment and continuity in economic policy direction.
