Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday announced a ₦500 million support package from the Rivers Rainbow Coalition for the family of late Senator Barinada Mpigi.

Wike made the announcement in Port Harcourt during a Night of Tribute held in honour of the late lawmaker, popularly known as Barry, who passed away on February 19 after a brief illness.

According to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, the fund will be used to establish a foundation for the deceased senator’s family, aimed at ensuring long-term welfare and preserving his legacy.

Wike stressed that beyond ceremonial tributes, tangible support for the bereaved family was essential.

“Forming committees for burial is not enough. We must show clearly that we will not abandon the family he left behind,” he said.

He described the late Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East in the Senate, as a fearless and dependable political ally who remained loyal during periods of political turbulence in Rivers State.

“When we had political challenges, Barry was always coming to my house to show solidarity and commitment,” Wike said.

He also praised Mpigi’s contributions to development in Ogoniland, particularly his role in advancing the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni.

At the tribute event, political leaders across party lines paid glowing tributes to the late senator, describing him as a committed statesman whose influence cut across political divides.

Tony Okocha described Mpigi as a gentle, friendly and dedicated politician whose death represents a significant loss to the political class in Rivers State.

Former Rivers Elders Forum Chairman, Magnus Abe, said the late senator died at a time when his service was most needed, noting that his legacy would remain enduring.

“The contributions he made to Ogoni, Rivers and Nigeria will never be forgotten,” Abe said.

The Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of Ireland, Chief Onueze Okocha (SAN), also commended Mpigi for his patriotic disposition and support during his confirmation process.

Chairman of the Rivers Elders Council, Ferdinand Alabraba, described the late senator as a voice of reason and a lawmaker of great conviction.

Mpigi’s younger brother, Monday Mpigi, said the senator was the backbone of their family, describing him as dependable, supportive, and deeply compassionate.

Across the gathering, speakers highlighted Mpigi’s reputation as a grassroots mobiliser and a loyal public servant whose legacy continues to resonate across Rivers State regardless of political affiliation.
