Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu have been elected as substantive National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a consensus-backed vote at the party’s 2026 national convention.
The convention took place on Sunday at the velodrome of Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja and also saw the election of 19 other members to the PDP’s new national working committee.
Prominent attendees included former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi. The convention was reportedly monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ensuring its recognition as the legitimate party gathering.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and PDP national leader Nyesom Wike hailed the convention as a step toward healing and inclusiveness within the party. He reassured members that the PDP will contest the 2027 general elections, stating, “By the grace of God, the PDP will be on the ballot in 2027.”
Wike also emphasized the importance of building the party on inclusiveness and providing equal opportunity for all members. He commended delegates for their resilience and character, noting that the party would work to recover its mandate from those who had undermined it.
“I congratulate all of you who stood firm when the storm raged… Together, we are standing on the positive side of purpose and committed to the task of making Nigeria a truly prosperous country,” Wike said, amid cheers from delegates.
