The situation surrounding a possible withdrawal by the M23 rebel group remains unclear, as reports from local media and residents conflict with statements from the group itself.
Recent accounts indicate that M23 fighters may have been seen moving out of certain areas in North Kivu and abandoning long-held positions. However, the group has denied that any substantive withdrawal is taking place.
In a statement shared on social media, M23 insisted that the movements observed along several front lines are “routine, tactical troop rotations” and not indicative of a pullback. The group emphasized its continued commitment to protecting civilians and supporting confidence-building measures linked to the Doha peace process.
The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has not provided clarification on the situation. Officials have so far declined to comment on M23’s claims, leaving uncertainty over whether fighters are genuinely leaving positions or merely redeploying.
This lack of confirmed information makes it difficult to assess the actual situation on the ground, with local reports suggesting a drawdown, M23 framing the movements as standard rotations, and Kinshasa remaining silent.
M23 controls large swathes of North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, including key cities such as Goma and Bukavu, maintaining a significant presence in eastern Congo despite ongoing peace efforts.
