Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to formally receive Lagos-based student-athletes who delivered a landmark performance at the 2026 World School Games Olympia in Doha, Qatar.
The reception celebrates a “golden era” for Lagos school sports, following a historic medal haul across athletics, football, and swimming during the competition held from January 29 to 31.
Lagos schools dominated the leader boards across the Under-11, Under-13, and Under-15 categories. Highlights include Saint Saviour’s School, which finished 1st overall in the Under-11 category, and Grange School, which placed 2nd overall (U-13) and 3rd overall (U-15). Outstanding performances were also recorded by students from Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School, and Corona School.
The reception will also honour Team Lagos athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola (December 10–20, 2025). This group, including talents from Greensprings School and others, exemplifies the success of Lagos State’s sports development pipeline, having excelled first at the National Youth Games before contributing significantly to Nigeria’s medal count on the continental stage.
“These achievements are a source of immense pride. They reflect the steady revitalisation of the school sports ecosystem in Lagos, supported by committed parents, educators, and coaches,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.
Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, described the dual success as a “watershed moment” for the state’s sports policy: “This performance is a powerful demonstration of what happens when talent meets structure and opportunity. These athletes didn’t just win medals; they exported the ‘Lagos Spirit’—confidence, resilience, and excellence—to the world.”
The upcoming reception is more than a trophy presentation; it serves as a testament to Lagos State’s commitment to the student-athlete model, proving that academic distinction and sporting excellence can thrive hand-in-hand.
