The European Union announced on Thursday that it will provide approximately €63 million ($74.39 million) in humanitarian funding for Somalia.

The aid comes as the country continues to grapple with fighting between Somali armed forces and al-Shabaab militants, alongside prolonged droughts affecting millions of people.

The EU said the funding will prioritise life-saving health and nutrition services. With this latest package, the European Union has provided more than €750 million in humanitarian assistance to Somalia since 2017.

Earlier in February, the United Nations World Food Programme warned that its life-saving food and nutrition support in Somalia could end by April unless new funding is secured.

The EU did not provide a specific timeline for the disbursement of the €63 million aid package.
