President Bola Tinubu has congratulated winners of Saturday’s elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano and Rivers states.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended participants and stakeholders for the peaceful conduct of the polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted elections in the six FCT area councils and held by-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies in Rivers State, as well as Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.
The elections covered chairmanship and councillorship positions in Abuja Municipal (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji area councils.
INEC declarations so far indicate that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC and Bwari Area Councils, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in Gwagwalada.
In the state by-elections, the APC recorded victories in both Rivers State seats.
President Tinubu urged the winners to serve with humility, patriotism and dedication. He described the mandate given to them by the electorate as “a sacred trust.”
He also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as remarkable achievements in the territory, noting that the efforts had yielded political dividends for the governing APC.
The President further congratulated the APC national leadership, as well as the party’s Kano and Rivers State chapters, on the victories.
He lauded INEC, security agencies and voters for ensuring peaceful and successful elections. According to the statement, the President praised the courage and discipline displayed by contestants, noting that democracy is strengthened through active participation and competition.
Tinubu reaffirmed that the successful conduct of the elections reinforces democratic institutions. He also called on INEC to continue improving its processes to deliver more credible and exemplary elections.
However, the polls recorded low voter turnout, with opposition parties alleging unlawful conduct.
Earlier, the PDP inaugurated a special legal team to handle election petitions arising from the FCT Area Council elections.
