The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has drawn attention to the rare convergence of the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan beginning on the same day in Nigeria.
In a message shared on social media, Obi described the coincidence as more than a simple calendar alignment. He called it “a powerful symbol of shared sacrifice, reflection, and the possibility of national renewal.”
According to him, both religious periods are traditionally marked by fasting, prayer and thanksgiving. He referred to the overlap as a “double fast” and urged Nigerians to look beyond religious differences and recognise their shared humanity.
Obi encouraged citizens to use the solemn period to reflect on pressing national challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship, while extending compassion to vulnerable members of society.
“Prayer alone is not enough; it must be paired with action,” he said, stressing that charity, forgiveness and self-discipline are essential values that can promote national healing and strengthen social cohesion.
The former Anambra State governor said the unusual alignment presents an opportunity for Nigerians of different faiths to unite in purpose and work collectively towards building a more just and peaceful nation.
