The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its offices in Abuja and Lagos in observance of Presidents’ Day.

In a notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the mission stated that both the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, 16 February 2026, marking the annual federal holiday in the United States.

Presidents’ Day is observed on the third Monday of February each year, creating a long weekend for Americans as federal government offices, banks, post offices, and many schools and businesses close in commemoration.

The holiday was originally established to honour the birthday of the first US president, George Washington (born 1732), and was later expanded in 1971 to celebrate all US presidents and their contributions to the nation’s history and global influence.

The closure will primarily affect routine consular and administrative services. However, emergency services for American citizens will remain available during the public holiday.
