Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first African female artist to record seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The milestone came after her song ‘What You Need’ debuted at No. 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total number of chart appearances to seven.
With the achievement, Tems now ties fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African acts with the most Billboard Hot 100 entries.
Tems previously set another major record in 2022, becoming the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the chart through her collaboration with Future and Drake on ‘Wait For U.’
The singer could soon break the tie, as J. Cole’s upcoming track ‘Bunce Road Blues,’ featuring Tems and Future, is projected to debut on the chart next week.
Her continued success further highlights the growing global dominance of Afrobeats and African music on the international stage.
