Former Manchester United F.C. striker Wayne Rooney has called on Arsenal F.C. supporters to stand firmly behind their team as the Premier League title race reaches a critical stage.
Arsenal’s bid for a first league title in 22 years suffered a setback following a 2–1 defeat to Manchester City F.C., leaving the defending champions within striking distance with games in hand.
The setback came shortly after another disappointing 2–1 home loss to AFC Bournemouth, a match in which sections of supporters booed the players off the pitch at full-time.
Rooney criticised the reaction, warning that such moments could negatively affect the squad during a decisive period in the season.
“I think the Arsenal fans need to be better. They’ve been brilliant all season and they’ve hit a little bad run of form,” Rooney said.
He stressed that player performance is often influenced by crowd support, especially when results are not going their way.
“They need to understand how much the fan support means to the players and how much it can help you. When you lose a game and you get booed off, that can affect players,” he added.
With five games remaining, Arsenal remain firmly in the title race but are under increasing pressure from Manchester City, who could overtake them at the top of the table depending on results.
Rooney also highlighted the importance of unity between fans and players, particularly given Arsenal’s recent history of narrowly missing out on the title.
“For Arsenal to win the league, the Arsenal fans need to play their part. The fans need to back the players a little bit more because that will have hurt the Arsenal players, 100%,” he said.
As the season enters its final stretch, the title race remains finely balanced, with fan atmosphere and team morale potentially playing a key role in determining the outcome.
