The World Crafts Council (WCC) has honoured Otunba Olusegun Runsewe with the prestigious Icon of Crafts, Culture and Hospitality in Africa award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of arts, culture and the creative industry.
The honour was conveyed in an official letter from the World Crafts Council, which stated that the award was in recognition of Runsewe’s remarkable contributions and steadfast commitment to the advancement of crafts, both in Africa and globally.
“In recognition of your remarkable contribution and steadfast commitment to the advancement of crafts, the World Crafts Council is pleased to express its appreciation through the presentation of a commemorative plaque,” the letter stated.
According to the award letter, the commemorative plaque serves as a formal and symbolic acknowledgement of Runsewe’s commendable role in promoting crafts, culture and hospitality in Africa, as well as his invaluable support for the preservation of handicrafts and the empowerment of craft communities.
The World Crafts Council noted that the plaque stands as a testament to its deep respect for Runsewe’s leadership vision and enduring dedication to cultural heritage.
Otunba Olusegun Runsewe is the immediate past Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), where he played a pivotal role in repositioning Nigeria’s cultural and creative sector on the global stage.
The award was presented in the context of the World Craft Forum (Kuwait 2026), which had the theme “Craft in the Creative Economy.” The forum brought together international craft leaders, artisans and policymakers from across the world to deliberate on the role of crafts in modern society, with emphasis on sustainability, heritage preservation and resilience.
Participants at the forum explored how crafts can drive economic growth, strengthen cultural identity and contribute meaningfully to the global creative economy.
The World Crafts Council reiterated that the honour reflects Runsewe’s long-standing dedication to promoting cultural heritage, supporting artisans and strengthening the global visibility of African crafts.
