The Senate, through its Committee on Appropriations, has tentatively scheduled March 17, 2026, for the final consideration and passage of the ₦58.472 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill.
The announcement followed a special session in which the committee approved February 2 to 13, 2026, for detailed consideration of budget estimates at the committee level. A public hearing on the budget proposal has been scheduled for Monday, February 9, 2026.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, disclosed that Thursday, March 5, 2026, will feature an interactive session between committee members and key economic managers of the Federal Government, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
The committee has earmarked February 16 to 23, 2026, for submission of reports on budget defence by various standing committee chairmen. This will precede the presentation of the Appropriations Committee’s report to the Senate on March 17, the date now set for the final passage.
Senator Adeola noted that while the Senate leadership initially preferred the budget to be passed by March 12, 2026, he successfully requested an additional week to allow for more thorough scrutiny.
To facilitate detailed examination, hard copies of the 2026 budget have been printed and distributed to chairmen and members of the Senate’s standing committees, ensuring they have the necessary resources to review the estimates thoroughly.
