Air Tanzania has officially launched a direct air route between Dar es Salaam and Accra, Ghana, strengthening air connectivity between East and West Africa.
The new service will operate three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tanzanian authorities said the route is expected to unlock new economic opportunities and support tourism growth, as Tanzania prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Dar es Salaam–Accra route is designed to significantly reduce travel times between the two regions, eliminating long detours through overseas hubs that are often required by other carriers. Data from booking platform Kayak shows that Turkish Airlines currently serves the route in more than 17 hours, including a stopover in Istanbul.
The Accra service follows the earlier launch of Air Tanzania’s route to Lagos and aligns with the national carrier’s broader expansion strategy. The airline plans to add more international destinations in the coming months, including Muscat in Oman and London in the United Kingdom.
The expansion reflects a wider national strategy to position Air Tanzania as a key driver of air traffic growth, tourism development and overall transport activity in the country.
Tanzania has set an ambitious target of attracting 8 million tourists annually by 2030, up from about 5.3 million visitors recorded between 2024 and 2025. Ghana, meanwhile, is also pushing to boost arrivals after introducing visa-free entry for all African nationals in December 2024, a move expected to further stimulate intra-African travel.
