Wilfred Ndidi has been named the new captain of the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following the international retirement of William Troost-Ekong.
Troost-Ekong officially announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, bringing an end to a distinguished career with Nigeria’s senior national team.
Ndidi, who previously captained the Super Eagles during the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco last month, will now formally assume the leadership role ahead of the continental showpiece.
The Leicester City midfielder and Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon, are currently the most senior members of the national team setup. Simon is widely expected to be named vice-captain.
Ndidi, who made his Super Eagles debut in August 2015, has earned 71 caps for Nigeria and has remained a key figure in the team’s midfield for nearly a decade.
The new captain, however, missed Nigeria’s campaign at the delayed 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire after being ruled out by injury.
With Ndidi now at the helm, expectations are high as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2025 AFCON with renewed leadership and experience.
