Sevilla forward Akor Adams has expressed deep disappointment following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams said qualifying would have been a chance to bring joy to Nigerians, especially given the current socio-economic challenges facing the country.
Nigeria’s hopes were dashed after a 4-3 defeat in a penalty shootout against DR Congo on Sunday, eliminating the team from the tournament, which is set to be hosted across three North American countries.
Adams, who was substituted on at halftime for injured striker Victor Osimhen, struggled to make a significant impact on the Leopards’ defense but successfully converted his penalty during the shootout.
The striker shared his sentiments on social media:
“As a Nigerian, nothing hurts more than missing out on what could bring the most joy to my people amidst all that is happening in our dear country.”
During the World Cup qualifiers, Adams had also scored against Lesotho and Gabon, contributing to the team’s campaign before the heartbreaking exit.
