President Bola Tinubu will embark on a two-nation diplomatic visit on Wednesday, attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, followed by the AU-EU Summit in Luanda, Angola.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader’s first stop is Johannesburg, where he will join other G20 leaders under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.” This marks the first time the G20 summit is hosted on African soil.
The G20 summit at the Johannesburg Expo Centre runs from November 22–23 and will focus on inclusive and sustainable growth, debt and development finance, disaster-risk reduction, climate action, just energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence. Tinubu will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and discuss regional peace, security, and development. The African Union, now a full G20 member, is expected to participate in the Johannesburg summit.
Following the G20 meeting, President Tinubu will proceed to Luanda, Angola, for the AU–EU summit from November 24–25. The summit will convene leaders, innovators, and civil society representatives to deliberate on climate action, inclusive development, infrastructure, digital economy, creative industries, manufacturing, and agribusiness.
He will be accompanied by senior officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and the Economy, Solid Minerals, and Trade and Investment, as well as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency. Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of both meetings.
The G20 summit marks President Tinubu’s third visit to South Africa since assuming office, while the AU-EU summit in Luanda represents his first official visit to Angola as Nigeria’s Head of State.
