Harry Maguire: “It Would Be Silly to Leave Manchester United Now”

Harry Maguire says it would be “silly” to walk away from Manchester United at this stage of the club’s rebuilding process after revealing that United shut down summer interest in him.

The 32-year-old defender, who joined from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million, recently had his contract extended when United activated a one-year clause. That decision effectively ruled out any chance of a summer exit, despite enquiries from other clubs.

“Last year the clause was in their hands so there was no option for me,” Maguire said. “This year I’m up at the end of the season, but the club have made it clear I can’t leave. A couple of clubs enquired, and they got a quick response.”

Maguire confirmed he will hold talks with United in the coming months about his long-term future but stressed his pride in playing for the club.

“It’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could,” he added.

The defender praised the direction of the club under new leadership, including director of football Jason Wilcox and manager Ruben Amorim. He said the structure and atmosphere at United are “in a completely different place” compared to when he joined six years ago.

Reflecting on United’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in their Premier League opener, Maguire said performances are improving and highlighted the impact of new signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.

“These are players who are going to score goals and create chances, which is what this club demands,” he said. Maguire also singled out Sesko’s strength, pace, and aerial ability, predicting defenders will face tough challenges against the young striker.

United will aim to build momentum in the weeks ahead as Amorim continues to shape his squad for the season.
