Arsenal Women have completed the signing of Canadian forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool in a deal reportedly worth £1 million ($1.3 million) — a new world record transfer fee in women’s football.
The 20-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the reigning UEFA Women’s Champions League holders, becoming the most expensive female footballer in history.
The transfer eclipses the previous record of £900,000, paid by Chelsea to acquire Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave in January 2025.
“It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe,” said Smith. “I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.”
Smith had a standout season at Liverpool after her 2024 move from Sporting CP in Portugal, where she was signed for just £200,000.
She scored seven goals in 20 Women’s Super League appearances, attracting attention from multiple clubs.
Smith made her international debut for Canada at age 15 in 2019, and has been hailed as one of the most promising young attackers in world football.
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers praised the new signing, saying:
“Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal. We’ve been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age.”
With Smith now part of their attacking lineup, Arsenal continues to build a powerhouse squad capable of dominating domestic and European competitions in the years ahead.
