The Imo State Police Command has issued a ban on the use of unmarked mini-buses and commercial tricycles (Keke) for police patrol operations across the state, following widespread public complaints of harassment, extortion, and intimidation by officers.
The directive, released on Tuesday night, was signed by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, who described the practice as “grossly unprofessional.”
“This action follows numerous complaints of harassment, intimidation, and extortion by some tactical officers operating in unapproved vehicles,” the CP stated.
The ban affects all tactical teams, and any officer found violating the order will face immediate sanctions. Furthermore, commanders of such teams will be held accountable under the directive.
“Any team found violating this directive will face immediate sanctions. Commanders of such teams will be vicariously held liable,” the police chief warned.
The move is part of efforts to restore public confidence in the police and reinforce adherence to professional and ethical standards.
The Imo Police Command also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and ethical policing, in line with the broader vision of the Inspector General of Police.
