A dramatic scene unfolded on Wednesday afternoon in Victoria Island, Lagos, as a motorist resisting arrest by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) chose an extreme method—lying under his own vehicle—to avoid having it towed.
The incident occurred during peak traffic hours on Akin Adesola Road, heading toward Ozumba Mbadiwe, and caused a significant traffic backlog that extended all the way to the Civic Centre axis.
This was disclosed in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
According to the statement, “A motorist resisting arrest from VIO officers has kept under his vehicle thereby creating a scene and avoiding being towed at Akin Adesola inward Ozumba Mbadiwe causing traffic backlog to Civic Centre.”
The standoff quickly drew attention from bystanders and commuters, further slowing the already congested route.
Officials from the Lagos State Police Command and VIO officers were present at the scene, while LASTMA officers took charge of managing the heavy traffic resulting from the incident.
The motive behind the motorist’s refusal to cooperate remains unclear at the time of reporting, but the act has reignited concerns over public resistance to traffic enforcement in Lagos.
LASTMA has urged motorists to comply with lawful directives to prevent unnecessary delays and disruptions to public movement.
