President Tinubu Emphasizes Digital Identity as Key to Nigeria’s Socioeconomic Progress

Proving identity is essential for accessing welfare and advancing national development.

President Bola Tinubu has highlighted the critical importance of a unique proof of identity in ensuring the effective delivery of welfare services to citizens, in alignment with their fundamental human rights.

Speaking at the National Day of Identity event, organized by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), President Tinubu—represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume—stressed that the ability to accurately identify citizens is vital for government efficiency.

Themed *“Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) – Enabling Access to Services,”* the event underscored the essential role of digital identity in driving socioeconomic progress.

Tinubu pointed out that the inability to prove one’s identity is not merely an issue of convenience but a significant barrier to national development.

“DPI is the backbone that enables access to essential services, from healthcare and education to financial inclusion and social welfare,” Tinubu stated.

He explained that by establishing a robust digital public infrastructure, the government can ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of location or socioeconomic status, is fully integrated into the nation’s growth trajectory.

The President also linked the success of Nigeria’s digital identity initiatives to the government’s 8-point agenda, which includes key objectives such as food security, poverty eradication, economic growth, job creation, and improving national security.

By strengthening digital identification systems, Tinubu’s administration aims to ensure that all citizens have equitable access to opportunities and services.
