NDPC Orders Investigation into Unauthorized Access to NIMC Enrollees’ Data

The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has initiated a full-scale investigation into allegations of unauthorized access to the personal data of enrollees in the database of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). This regulatory action comes in response to growing concerns raised by the public regarding reports of illegal access to personal data by an entity known as XpressVerify.com.

Dr. Olatunji underscored the importance of safeguarding individuals’ personal data and ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. He highlighted NDPC’s commitment to fostering adequate data protection standards and its ongoing collaboration with NIMC in this regard. Earlier this year, NDPC conducted a training session with relevant officers of NIMC to reinforce data protection measures.

In a statement, Dr. Olatunji stated, “We acknowledge NIMC’s efforts in initiating internal investigations and its immediate assurance of cooperation with NDPC to address the allegations and review existing protocols for verifying the identity of enrollees on its platform.” He emphasized NDPC’s intention to collaborate with relevant agencies to audit the trails of unauthorized data processing and monetization, holding individuals accountable for any violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

Furthermore, Dr. Olatunji directed that preliminary findings of the investigation be made public within seven days, underscoring the commitment to transparency and accountability in the regulatory process.

Observers say the investigation represents a significant step in addressing concerns regarding data privacy and security, demonstrating the government’s dedication to upholding data protection laws and safeguarding citizens’ rights. As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders await the outcomes and measures to strengthen data protection frameworks and prevent future breaches.
