The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has retained its position among Nigeria’s highest-ranked universities in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, sharing the country’s top spot with the University of Ibadan (UI).

Both universities were placed in the 801–1000 global ranking band in the 2026 edition of the rankings, which assessed 2,191 institutions across 115 countries and territories.

The ranking represents continued recognition of the research and academic activities taking place within Nigeria’s higher-education sector.

Five Key Areas Assessed

The Times Higher Education rankings evaluate universities using performance indicators grouped into five broad areas:

  • Teaching
  • Research environment
  • Research quality
  • Industry
  • International outlook

These indicators are designed to provide a broad assessment of university performance rather than focusing solely on teaching or research output.

UNILAG said its performance reflects the contributions of its management, staff, students, alumni, partners and other stakeholders.

Nigeria Records Stronger Global Representation

The 2026 rankings also highlighted the growing presence of Nigerian universities internationally.

A total of 24 Nigerian universities secured places in the 2026 THE rankings, compared with 21 institutions in the previous editions. This made Nigeria the most represented country in Sub-Saharan Africa in the ranking.

Seventeen of the Nigerian institutions included in the ranking are federal universities, according to the Federal Government.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa described the development as evidence that investments in research, innovation, digital transformation, quality assurance, infrastructure and governance are beginning to generate greater international recognition for Nigerian universities.

UNILAG’s Research and Industry Performance

UNILAG’s own reporting indicates that its performance in the 2026 ranking was particularly notable in research quality and industry income. The university also highlighted its continued emphasis on research, teaching, innovation, partnerships and community engagement.

The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, has set a broader ambition of building an innovative and entrepreneurial university capable of competing among the world’s leading institutions.

A Positive Signal for Nigerian Higher Education

The latest ranking comes against the backdrop of longstanding challenges facing Nigeria’s tertiary education system, including funding constraints, infrastructure gaps and the need to strengthen research capacity.

The improved representation of Nigerian universities therefore offers an important indication that some institutions are gaining greater visibility on the international academic stage.

For UNILAG, sharing the country’s highest position with the University of Ibadan reinforces its status as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions and places further emphasis on the need to sustain improvements in research, teaching, innovation and global partnerships.

As Nigerian universities continue to seek stronger positions internationally, the challenge will be to convert improved rankings into tangible gains in research impact, graduate quality, innovation and national development.
