A candidate endorsed by Donald Trump has lost a closely watched Republican primary contest in the US state of Iowa, marking a notable setback for the former president’s influence in recent state-level races.

Randy Feenstra, a three-term congressman who was widely viewed as a frontrunner in the race for the Republican nomination for governor, conceded defeat on Tuesday despite receiving a last-minute endorsement from Trump ahead of the vote.

Feenstra, a staunch Trump ally throughout his congressional career, was ultimately defeated by farmer and businessman Zach Lahn, who ran on a strongly populist, anti-establishment platform.

Lahn’s campaign embraced slogans such as “Make Iowa Healthy Again” and “Iowa First,” while focusing on restricting foreign and out-of-state ownership of farmland and criticising what he described as “global elites.”

He also received support from Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organisation founded by the late Charlie Kirk, and from grassroots activists who argued that Feenstra represented the Washington political establishment.

The result is being interpreted by analysts as a sign of shifting sentiment within parts of the Republican base in Iowa, a state that has consistently voted for Trump in recent presidential elections but is showing signs of political volatility.

Lahn will now face Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand in the November general election, in a contest that is already attracting national attention as Democrats look to expand their competitiveness in traditionally Republican territory.

The broader political backdrop has also drawn scrutiny, with Trump spending several days out of the public eye aside from prerecorded media appearances and posts on Truth Social, including comments on foreign policy developments involving Iran.

Recent weeks have also seen mixed outcomes for Trump-backed candidates in other states, with some victories alongside unexpected losses that have raised questions about the consistency of his endorsement power across different electoral contexts.

In Iowa, economic concerns are also seen as influencing voter sentiment, particularly among agricultural communities affected by trade tariffs and rising input costs linked to global geopolitical tensions.

Polling has indicated a decline in Trump’s approval rating in the state, reflecting broader unease over economic pressures and policy impacts on farming communities.

Democrats are now hoping to capitalise on the shifting landscape, with both the gubernatorial and Senate races in Iowa expected to be closely contested in November.

The Senate seat being vacated by Republican Joni Ernst is also drawing significant attention, with Democratic candidate Josh Turek emerging from the primary to face Republican Ashley Hinson in what analysts describe as a competitive race.

With both major contests now considered competitive, Iowa is once again emerging as a key battleground state that could influence the balance of political power in Washington.
