The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, has introduced a new Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway aimed at helping eligible graduates already working as teachers to become professionally qualified.
The programme is designed for graduates teaching in schools who do not have education-related qualifications such as a Bachelor of Education, National Certificate in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Through the new pathway, participants will have an opportunity to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, qualify for the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination and work towards obtaining a professional teaching licence.
The initiative is expected to run for six months and is being developed in collaboration with the National Teachers’ Institute, NTI. According to reports, the programme is expected to begin in September 2026.
A New Opportunity for Graduate Teachers
The new pathway is part of wider reforms aimed at improving professionalism in Nigeria’s teaching sector.
The TRCN announced the initiative during the 4th Digital Educators Conference and Exhibition, held in Lagos on August 5 and 6. The event focused on building the capacity of educators, particularly as technology continues to transform the education system.
For many graduates already working as teachers, the programme could provide a structured route to gain the qualifications needed to continue and advance in the profession.
The development may also help address concerns about teachers who have strong academic qualifications and teaching experience but do not hold formal education degrees.
Government Pushes Teacher Professionalism
The programme comes as the Federal Government continues to emphasise teacher quality, professional standards and digital skills as important parts of education reform.
In July 2026, the Federal Government urged the TRCN to continue promoting professional standards, ethical practice, continuous teacher development and the use of technology to improve education outcomes.
The TRCN has also indicated plans to strengthen professional licensing across the country. According to reports, the council expects all teachers in Nigeria to possess valid TRCN licences by the end of 2027.
Teachers are expected to pass the Professional Qualifying Examination before obtaining certification, while professional licences will be renewed periodically based on continuous professional development requirements.
