President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The President made the announcement on Friday during his Democracy Day address, describing the move as a tribute to the late military officer’s contributions to Nigeria’s journey toward democratic governance.

Tinubu said the decision formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to recognise individuals who played significant roles in shaping modern democratic Nigeria.

According to the President, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua remains one of the key architects of the nation’s democratic development because of his commitment to national unity and political partnership.

“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu said.

“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.”

The President also announced national honours for more than 30 democracy advocates and soldier-democrats who participated in the June 12 struggle.

Among those to receive posthumous recognition are Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi. Tinubu said the full list of award recipients would be released in the coming days.

The June 12 struggle is widely regarded as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, leading to the restoration of civilian rule after years of military governance.
