United States captain Tim Ream has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 38, bringing an end to a 16-year career with the national team.

Ream made the announcement on Tuesday ahead of the United States’ friendly match against Chile in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. The United States went on to defeat Chile 4-2.

The defender finished his international career with 86 appearances for the United States and helped the country win two CONCACAF Nations League titles.

Ream made his senior international debut in 2010 and became one of the most experienced players in the United States team. He also played at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups.

At the 2026 World Cup, which was hosted on home soil, Ream served as captain of the United States. The team reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Belgium.

Speaking about his decision, Ream said he was proud to have represented the United States for 16 years but believed it was time to leave the national team.

He explained that the team was becoming younger and that this played a part in his decision to step away from international football.

Ream also said he would continue his professional career with Charlotte FC, his Major League Soccer club. He has not yet decided how long he will continue playing at club level.

Before joining Charlotte FC, Ream spent several years playing in England. He featured for Bolton Wanderers and Fulham before returning to Major League Soccer.

During his time with the United States, Ream also wore the captain’s armband on several occasions. According to reports, he captained the team in 26 matches, including four games during the 2026 World Cup.

His retirement now means the United States will need to select a new captain as the team begins preparations for its next international fixtures.

The United States recently defeated Chile 4-2 and are scheduled to face Mexico on Saturday before playing Canada on October 6.

Ream’s international career ends after more than a decade and a half of service to the United States. His 86 caps place him among the country’s most experienced men’s national-team players.
