A tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile on Thursday, October 1, 2026, resulting in a fire onboard the vessel.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that it received a third-party report of the incident at about 5:50 p.m. GMT. According to the maritime security agency, the tanker was hit while sailing through the strategically important waterway. The impact caused a fire, although the full extent of the damage was not immediately known.

UKMTO said the crew members were reported to be safe following the incident. However, authorities had not yet established whether the tanker suffered serious structural damage or whether the incident resulted in any environmental pollution.

The attack adds to a series of security incidents involving commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in recent days. UKMTO has issued several warnings concerning tankers that were reportedly struck by unknown projectiles while navigating the waterway.

Maritime authorities have not identified the source of the projectile or confirmed who was responsible for the latest incident. No group had publicly claimed responsibility at the time of reporting.

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported, citing local sources, that the vessel was a very large crude carrier (VLCC) with a capacity of about 2.5 million barrels. It said the tanker was struck approximately eight kilometres off the Omani coast. However, these details were not confirmed by UKMTO in its initial incident report.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes because large volumes of crude oil and other energy products pass through the waterway. Continued attacks on commercial vessels therefore create concerns
