Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been handed a difficult quarter-final assignment at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after being drawn against Cameroon.
The defending champions will face the Indomitable Lionesses on Sunday in Casablanca as they continue their campaign to retain the continental title.
Nigeria secured its place in the last eight after producing an impressive 6–2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C fixture. The emphatic result helped the Super Falcons recover from a difficult start to the tournament and finish second in their group.
Cameroon, meanwhile, secured top spot in Group D after completing the group stage unbeaten. The Indomitable Lionesses finished their campaign with a 1–1 draw against Cape Verde, having previously recorded victories over Mali and Ghana.
The meeting between Nigeria and Cameroon is expected to be one of the most competitive quarter-final encounters of the tournament.
Nigeria enters the knockout stage with considerable attacking confidence following the six-goal demolition of Egypt. However, head coach Justin Madugu has acknowledged concerns about the team’s defensive performance.
The Super Falcons conceded twice against Egypt despite scoring six goals, continuing a defensive vulnerability that has attracted attention during their campaign. Madugu has indicated that the coaching staff will work to correct those problems before the Cameroon encounter.
The quarter-final is particularly important because qualification for the semi-finals will also secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals will automatically qualify for the global tournament.
For Nigeria, the objective goes beyond simply reaching the semi-finals. The Super Falcons are seeking to defend their continental crown and extend their record as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
Cameroon, however, will provide a stern test.
The Indomitable Lionesses have shown consistency throughout the group stage, finishing at the top of their section and remaining unbeaten. Their defensive organisation and physical approach could pose significant challenges for Nigeria.
The Super Falcons will therefore need to combine the attacking quality displayed against Egypt with greater defensive discipline.
Players such as Rasheedat Ajibade, Gift Monday and the rest of Nigeria’s attacking unit will be expected to maintain the momentum from the Egypt victory, while the defence must limit the opportunities available to Cameroon’s forwards.
The quarter-final line-up also features Côte d’Ivoire against Algeria, hosts Morocco against South Africa, and Malawi against Ghana.
For Nigeria, victory over Cameroon would take the defending champions one step closer to another African title while simultaneously guaranteeing their place at next year’s Women’s World Cup.
The stage is therefore set for another major chapter in the long-running Nigeria-Cameroon rivalry.
