Paris Saint-Germain stand on the brink of football history as they prepare to face Arsenal in the Champions League final in Budapest, with a chance to secure back-to-back European titles and cement their status among the continent’s elite.

Twelve months after their emphatic 5–0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich delivered the club’s first Champions League crown, PSG now return to the final as reigning champions and strong favourites to retain their title. A second consecutive triumph would elevate the French giants into rare company among Europe’s greatest teams.

Under manager Luis Enrique, PSG have undergone a dramatic transformation. Once defined by high-profile signings and repeated European disappointments, the club has shifted toward a younger, more cohesive and tactically disciplined squad that has dominated elite opposition over the past 18 months.

Teams such as Manchester City under Pep Guardiola and Bayern Munich in the semi-finals have struggled to contain PSG’s intensity and attacking fluidity. Arsenal, who fell short against them in last season’s semi-finals, now face the same formidable challenge on the grandest stage.

“We understand that we are the reigning champions and we can win again,” said Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been instrumental in PSG’s run with seven goals and three assists in the knockout stages. “Of course this will be difficult, but we’ve proved once more that we can beat any team as long as we play our way.”

The departure of global superstars Lionel Messi, Neymar, and later Kylian Mbappé marked the end of PSG’s “galáctico” era. In its place, Luis Campos and Luis Enrique have built a balanced, high-energy squad led by emerging and established talents including Ousmane Dembélé, Vitinha, Achraf Hakimi, and Kvaratskhelia.

Dembélé, now converted into a central attacking force, has enjoyed the most productive period of his career, scoring 35 goals last season and winning the Ballon d’Or. This season, despite fitness management, he has remained decisive with 19 goals and 11 assists.

PSG’s resurgence has been built on intensity, tactical clarity, and squad cohesion, with the team now widely regarded as one of the most dangerous attacking units in Europe. Under Luis Enrique, they have reached three consecutive Champions League semi-finals and now stand one win away from back-to-back titles.

However, history shows how rare such an achievement would be. Only Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane have won consecutive Champions League titles in the modern era, while AC Milan achieved the feat in 1989 and 1990.

For PSG, a second straight triumph would mark a defining shift in identity—from a project once criticised for its lack of European success despite vast investment, to a side capable of sustained continental dominance.

Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, now stands on the verge of joining an elite group of managers with three European Cups. As he put it: “We want to keep writing history because we feel there are still things to be achieved.”
