Nigeria’s opposition parties are continuing to face disagreements over how to coordinate their efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several political groups pursuing separate platforms and alliances.
The development comes as opposition figures continue discussions on possible cooperation, including efforts to establish a common political strategy. Recent reports indicate that major opposition politicians remain divided over party structures, leadership arrangements and the question of whether they should support a single presidential candidate.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has emerged as one of the platforms involved in the opposition realignment. Other parties and political groups have also been involved in coalition discussions, although the process has faced disagreements over membership and leadership.
A separate Rainbow Coalition, associated with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has also become part of the political discussions. Wike has described the group as a multi-party platform supporting President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election while maintaining that it is not an APC structure. However, APC governors have expressed opposition to political arrangements that they say could weaken the party or affect its candidates in other elections.
The political situation has therefore produced different forms of cooperation. Some politicians may support the same presidential candidate while remaining on different platforms for governorship and legislative elections. Channels Television noted that Nigeria’s 2027 political landscape includes separate presidential tickets and different party interests, making the alliances more complicated than traditional party-to-party arrangements.
The opposition coalition discussions are expected to continue as political parties prepare for the January 2027 elections. The outcome of these negotiations will depend on how the participating groups resolve questions surrounding leadership, candidate selection, party structures and their respective political interests.
