The Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) has officially unveiled its National Headquarters in Lagos in a landmark development aimed at strengthening the institutional framework of Nigeria’s tourism industry and reinforcing collaboration among stakeholders.

The commissioning of the headquarters, held on Wednesday, comes ahead of the Association’s 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and reflects NATOP’s commitment to building a stronger, more visible and professionally coordinated tourism sector capable of contributing more significantly to Nigeria’s economic development.

The event attracted prominent stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, including the immediate past president Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) Nkereuwem Onung,  Ikechi Uko, Nigerian travel business consultant, promoter and tourism development expert  Ikechi Uko, and the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Oloruntoyin Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila alongside tour operators, travel professionals, tourism investors and industry partners.

The unveiling marks a major milestone in the association’s history, providing it with a permanent national base from which to coordinate activities, promote advocacy, strengthen partnerships and drive the development of Nigeria’s tourism industry.

A New Chapter for NATOP

For nearly a decade, NATOP has served as the umbrella body representing professional tour operators across Nigeria, promoting best practices, encouraging domestic tourism and advocating policies that support sustainable industry growth.

The establishment of a National Headquarters is expected to significantly enhance the association’s operational capacity while providing a central platform for engagement with government agencies, development organisations and private sector stakeholders.

Industry observers described the development as a clear demonstration of NATOP’s determination to build a stronger institution capable of supporting the evolving needs of Nigeria’s tourism ecosystem.

Beyond serving as an administrative office, the headquarters is expected to function as a centre for strategic planning, professional development, stakeholder meetings, industry research and tourism promotion.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, NATOP President Alhaja Bolaji Mustapha described the commissioning of the headquarters as a defining moment in the association’s journey.

She noted that the new facility symbolises the association’s commitment to institutional growth, professionalism and stronger collaboration across the tourism value chain.

According to her, Nigeria possesses enormous tourism potential that can only be fully realised through closer partnerships between government, the private sector and tourism professionals.

She further stressed that NATOP will continue to champion initiatives that promote destination marketing, improve service standards, strengthen capacity building and attract greater investment into the sector.

Mustapha added that the headquarters would serve as a rallying point for members and industry stakeholders committed to transforming tourism into a major contributor to national economic growth.

Onung Describes New NATOP Headquarters as a Symbol of Stability

Describing the newly commissioned NATOP National Headquarters as a symbol of stability, immediate past president of the Association Nkereuwem Onung, said the facility represents a significant milestone in the organization’s journey toward institutional growth and professionalism.

He noted that having a permanent headquarters underscores NATOP’s commitment to strengthening its structures, enhancing collaboration among members and stakeholders, and providing a solid foundation for the sustainable development of Nigeria’s tourism industry.

According to him, the new headquarters reflects the Association’s vision of building a resilient, credible and well-coordinated body capable of advancing the interests of tour operators while contributing meaningfully to the growth of the nation’s tourism sector.

Lagos Government Commends Initiative

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, commended NATOP for establishing a permanent national headquarters, describing the initiative as a significant contribution to the development of Nigeria’s tourism industry.

She noted that institutional strength is essential for building a globally competitive tourism sector capable of attracting both domestic and international visitors.

According to her, Lagos State remains committed to supporting initiatives that encourage tourism development, cultural promotion, investment and job creation.

She also emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between government institutions and private sector operators in achieving long-term industry growth urging tourism stakeholders to continue working together to improve infrastructure, enhance visitor experiences and promote Nigeria as a preferred travel destination.

AGM to Chart the Future of Tourism

The unveiling of the headquarters officially sets the stage for NATOP’s 10th Annual General Meeting, which is expected to bring together stakeholders from across the tourism and hospitality industry.

The meeting will provide members with an opportunity to review the association’s achievements, discuss industry challenges and develop strategies for expanding Nigeria’s tourism economy.

Key discussions are expected to focus on destination development, tourism investment, digital transformation, capacity building, policy advocacy and sustainable tourism practices.

Participants will also explore opportunities for strengthening collaboration among tour operators, hospitality businesses, transport providers and government agencies.

Tourism Seen as a Key Economic Growth Sector

Over the years, Nigeria’s tourism industry has been consistently described as one of the country’s most promising non-oil sectors.

With its rich cultural heritage, diverse tourist attractions, historical landmarks, festivals and natural landscapes, the country possesses significant opportunities to generate employment, stimulate entrepreneurship and increase foreign exchange earnings.

Industry experts, however, have consistently identified infrastructure deficits, inadequate destination marketing, limited investment and security concerns as some of the challenges affecting the sector’s growth.

Stakeholders believe stronger institutions such as NATOP have an important role to play in addressing these challenges through advocacy, professional standards and strategic partnerships.

Strengthening Institutional Capacity

The establishment of the National Headquarters demonstrates NATOP’s determination to build an institution capable of responding to the changing dynamics of the global tourism industry.

The facility is expected to provide a permanent platform for stakeholder engagement, policy dialogue, training programmes and collaborative initiatives that promote sustainable tourism development.

Industry leaders believe the headquarters will also improve coordination among members while enhancing the association’s visibility both nationally and internationally.

Looking Ahead

As NATOP prepares to commence its 10th Annual General Meeting, the unveiling of its National Headquarters represents more than the commissioning of a new office.

It reflects the association’s long-term vision of creating a stronger institutional foundation for Nigeria’s tourism industry while fostering closer collaboration between government and the private sector.

With renewed focus on innovation, partnership and sustainable development, stakeholders believe the new headquarters will serve as a catalyst for advancing Nigeria’s tourism agenda and positioning the country as one of Africa’s leading travel destinations.
